I survived my first day

I survived my first day! Thank you to everyone for all your messages of support and good luck, so as promised, here's a quick review of my first day.

Overall good :-) The team are all lovely and were very welcoming. I had a present (beautiful paperweight) and card waiting for me and a well equipped desk with window view over the Uetliberg. I'm not yet official and in the system, so can't log on, can't get in the building or do various things. It'll take a few days yet before I'm fully set up. But I do have a cash card to use in the cafeteria and I know where the ladies are (most important induction tasks!!)

So, achievements.... I spoke German all day, I didn't get lost in the enormous building and I looked good in my suit! It's important... I caught sight of myself in the mirror and thought "hmm, looking slim" :-) I also passed the flipchart test (!) and the "find this room" test and I was also asked to take the notes at the department meeting, which I thought was a bit mean, but perhaps was a calculated task to see if I could. Taking the minutes was okay, writing them up might be more problematic!! Note to self: take dictionary to work tomorrow....They kept saying that they're really busy and need me up and running asap. I'm booked in to sit in on several courses and I have to co-train on one of the banking ones in a couple of months. I'm observing a "train the trainer" course next week and apparently I get to do a section. AARGH!! But it's good to be thrown in sooner rather than later?

I walked to work and got there at 8.30 and they let me go at 4.30, so a short day to start off with. I've got lists of tasks and objectives to get me through the first weeks and months, but it's still not clear what exact projects I'll be working on. I'll talk to my boss tomorrow and find that out. I've got several members of the team to meet and talk to properly and I hope that it will go as well as it has today.

Overall, feeling pleased if a little tired. Will just take my tasks step by step and do my best. I know that my German will improve. I managed fine today, but at times found it difficult to catch everything, particularly at lunch time when the whole group was talking in a mixture of German / Swiss German!!

Sounds very positive! I'm glad you had a good first day. I think it's better to be thrown in sooner than later...nothing more frustrating than sitting around with nothing to do because nobody has the time or knows what to do with you.

Good for you, and in German all day, too!

Well done, and congratulations.

I bet your German and Swiss German improve by leaps and bounds :)

This must be so exciting! I always feel so out-of-sorts starting a new job, but happy too. Sounds like you passed swimmingly.
