slowUp Sunday

Today was the slowUp event at the Zürichsee. The main road along the lake coast from Meilen to Rapperswil was shut to vehicles and was taken over by pedestrians / scooters / prams / skates / bikes / strange looking bikes / people dancing on skates with a portable sound system / basically any moving vehicle which was powered by humans :-)

It took us a leisurely 2 hours and it was a really nice skate. The sun was shining, everyone was happy and smiling. We passed through villages which had set up food and drink stands, music (live and recorded), vineyards and the atmosphere was really good. Near Rapperswil we were suprised to see sun_beetle and her fella! They had skated / biked from Meilen to Rapperswil and were on their way back!

I love the swiss way of life. I love the way that hundreds of people took part in the slow up and had fun. I love the way that car drivers aren't demonised here, but that alternative means of transport are so well supported. I loved the fact that I saw a couple in their fifties skating together holding hands. They *nearly" had matching kit, but not quite... They looked so fit and healthy, it was such a good example of long term health. I also loved the fact that there were so many children of all ages and sizes taking part. And many parents who were pushing / pulling / cajoling said children. I want to have a family here: The more I see of Zürich and Switzerland, the more convinced I am that it's a brilliant place to bring up children!
