Research into LiveJournal and Archives

I've just seen this really interesting research post in the blog_sociology community. Gingervere is doing research into Livejournal usage, and need participants. The questions (and my answers) are below, but click here to take part.

The questions
1. How did you find out about LJ?
2. Why do you keep a Journal?
3. Do you also keep a paper diary?
4. How long have you had an LJ? How long do you think you'll keep writing in it?
5. Have you ever lost whole LJ entries or parts of them? How did you feel about it?
6. What's your favorite thing about LJ? Your least favorite? ^
7. Would you want all or part of your LJ to survive you? Who/where would you leave it to?
8. If an archive or library asked to keep a copy of your LJ for research purposes, would you donate it?

1. How did you find out about LJ?
Friends on bookcrossing (www.bookcrossing.com) kept talking about blogs... and I started investigation. Signed up about a year ago

2. Why do you keep a Journal?
To start, it was just another internet idea that seemed interesting. I started the journal, not really knowing how I'd use it. But during the year the journal has grown into several uses (listed in no particular order!)
- as an extension of my bookcrossing shelf
- as a place to host news and photos for my family and friends (I'm an english expat living in Yurich, Switzerland
- as a method of combatting loneliness, have found a real community of support and friends here
- as a repository for my research musings (just finished a masters degree in trainign and performance management) - I wish that I'd hosted my entire research diary on here

3. Do you also keep a paper diary?
yes, i have a moleksin notebook, whcih I update every couple of days. tends to be more intimate stuff, ie relationships and my current job hunt

4. How long have you had an LJ? How long do you think you'll keep writing in it?
since May 2005. I'd like to think the LJ will continue for years, but life changes :-) When I start work I envisage that my usage will change... less frequent for a start...

5. Have you ever lost whole LJ entries or parts of them? How did you feel about it?
Managed to delete an entry accidentally, pretty annoyed about that. It does occur to me that I have no backup of my lj and that I would be devastated to lose any or all entries.

6. What's your favorite thing about LJ? Your least favorite? ^
- the ability to write and make sense of my world, whilst interacting with a community of friends
- the fact that sometimes I get caught up in updating my lj world, to the exclusion of doing things in the real world, it can get addictive.

7. Would you want all or part of your LJ to survive you? Who/where would you leave it to?
Yes, haven't thought about this in any detail yet. Not sure what the options are...

8. If an archive or library asked to keep a copy of your LJ for research purposes, would you donate it?
yes

Please feel free to use my lj in any way you wish :-)
